Ridge Valley / Family Portrait is a double-sided canvas by Walter Emerson Baum. The Ridge Valley side of the canvas is signed, titled and dated in the lower center of the painting: "Baum / Ridge Valley 1932". The Family Portrait side of the canvas is signed at lower left: "W.E. Baum". The oil on masonite measures 26 x 31 inches. Walter Baum was known for occassionally painting on both sides of a canvas or board. Walter Baum was born in Sellersville, Pennsylvania in 1884. Interestingly, he is the only Pennsylvania Impressionist to be born in Bucks County. Baum was a well known art teacher; he began by giving lessons in his home in 1918 and later went on to establish the Baum School of Art in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
