October on the Delaware circa 1940s
October on the Delaware, by Fern Coppedge is a beautiful depiction of Bucks County in Autumn. The oil on canvas measures 14 x 16 inches and is signed at the lower right: "Fern I Coppedge". Likely painted during the 1940s the painting retains its original framed designed by the Bucks County framemaker, Raymond Vanselous. Vanselous was a native of Uhlerstown, Pennsylvania and studied under Frederick Harer for four years beginning in 1925. He later went on to open his own frame shop in New Hope where he framed artwork by many artists of the New Hope School, including Edward Redfield. Fern Coppedge is one of the best known New Hope School painters. She also exhibited with the Philadelphia Ten for a number of years. As a child she was often ridiculed for her personal intrepretation of color. Her work is highly sought after and can be easily identified by its strong colors and interesting perspectives.
